Heavily burnt finished cladding

Uses – Exterior cladding and interior wall coverings

It is a delicate finish; you will get black hands if left untreated. Even when treated it is best not to use this product in an environment where people or children will want to stick their fingers in and scratch at the surface.

Not for flooring and furniture with anything more than delicate use or where you can’t touch it.

This finish is presented with a deep crackled finish. It can be left untreated or oiled in various finishes, matt, satin or gloss. It can also be treated with a fire rating of EuroClass B.

Burnt and brushed finish

Uses – Exterior cladding, interior wall coverings, furniture

This has a more durable finish than the heavily burnt finish. Brushing can result in a dark board with a smooth finish in a dark effect. If brushed further the natural timber will be exposed and present a combination of burnt and natural timber. Brushed timbers can be coloured too, there are a number of key projects already on the ground in the UK with coloured charred timber cladding.

Tips and further advice

Burnt timber products are to be treated as a specialist product. By simply purchasing burnt timber products you can’t guarantee that the product may be the right choice for your project nor can we be certain that you carpenter understands their use or has installation experience.

The process of preparing burnt timber products is usually done for each individual project after samples have been approved. You may request any size or shape you require for your project, thickness is usually at a minimum of 19mm for Cedar and thicker for other timbers.

If we supply a finished product it is not advisable to “re-engineer” or “alter” the material by re burning or applying any further chemical treatment. It may be necessary to trim the short board ends and this shouldn’t pose any issue, the board ends can then be sealed or painted as required prior to the installation. Ripping the board along the length should be avoided and boards to the correct width should be ordered as required.

If you have a special dimension to fit a specific project, this should be requested in the first instance and drawings presented to define what is required and your products can then be manufactured. This will assist In the cleanest work and maximise the efficiency of your installation.

If you have charred products which are untreated (chemically) boards sent to you, there will undoubtedly be a large amount of loose carbon on the board surface. This is fragile and should be handled with care. The boards may show knocks and what looks like damage – all untreated products will have this and is part of the nature of them.

Boards that may have been treated, brushed and treated or similar will still have to be treated with care as they are a finished product.

Don’t expect your tradespeople to treat these boards with any kind of respect as they will undoubtedly pile the product with all of the other timber on site and when it comes to be used you’ll certainly have issues.
