good afternoon all.
Â
would like to introduce Ipe wood with hidden fixing system for external decking in Jordan ( middle east ) , but i have some questions hoping to get answers for.
1- does ipe decking need a special treatment for this region other than treatments used in europe? I know that Ipe decking is very popular and the most preffered wood in Israel, i have seen the photos on decking network and it all looks very profesional.Â
2- is it best to buy the wood Pre-treated from supplier? or should I apply my own treatment that suits this region?
3- what substructure is most prefered? wood? Â
4- what specifications of the ipe wood should i look for. ie KD %?
Â
regards,
Fahed khayyat

Hi Fahed
1. No special treatment necessary unless you require a different finish, although quality decking oil does enhance the longevity and aesthetic of your timber.
2. This is only really necessary for timbers with a high tannin content like Merbau. Post installation treatment would be the best choice as you can sand down the deck easier that hasn’t been pre-oiled.
3. Timber is best, softwood treated and certified C16 minimum or C24 is best unless you can afford hardwood.
4. KD would suit best in your environment, AD would contract soon after installation.
Â
hope this helps, feedback from other installers would also be of assistance here.
regards
Karl

hello we just sold ipe hidden clip system to your neighbouring country Lebanon, we have never sold to your country but we advise:
KD,
no treatment,
after installation UV inhibitor (against greying) and
substructure is most often some other kind of wood (cheaper but definitely also KD!)
we guess your market in ipe clip system, on our website we have some pros and cons. Israel by the way is not often clip system. Only French influenced markets, at least this is our experience.

Hi Fahed
At Owatrol we provide many solutions for all types of applications. Â For an application such as yours, we would certainly recommend applying Tropitech as it is designed for tropical, humid and extremely hot environments and has an unrivalled resistance to UV rays.
Further information on Tropitech and can be found from the following link:Â http://www.owatrol.pro/index.php?langue=en&page=produits-tropitech
Please review the information on the site and when you have further questions, then please ask and I will do my best to answer them?

Hi there Fahed
In my experience so far in Israel Ipe doesn’t need any extra treatments other than a good sand and oil some weeks after installation for best results. Nor have we fitted pre-treated boards as far as I’m aware theres no need for special pre-treatment. For the substructure I recommend wood in 90% of cases, exceptions being where your base will stand in water(like around swimming pools) or places where you havent the height to use normal material.
We fit both KD and AD ipe from deck to deck depending on the source/budget, both are fine to work with in our climate but I would recommend as you want to use a hidden fixing system to source and fit narrower boards, 14cm ipe can release itself from the clips over time through shrinkage and movement, keep in mind the less material in the board the less it can shrink.
Best of luck

thank you lain and thanks to all your repleis.Â
yes i was also advised to use narrower boards.. also advised that they should be pre grooved on the bottom to reduce bending of the boards.

hello, I read that AD is being sent to Israel, the experience we have is sending AD to a DRY environment is a guarantee for problems, although ipe wood is very very stable, it is still wood and so prone to the elements. Therefore, KD decking is the only appropriate product for this dry region otherwise you may expect some % of your boards converting into banana shape, especially the longer lengths.
In order to avoid cracking you should always wax your ends and in order to avoid the greying use a UV filtering coating. See for more on finishing and coating of your hardwood decking by clicking on this weblink

thank you for your valuable discussion and inputs.Â
ok now one question.. if you say that the wood should be left for a week to adapt to the new condition after installation , and then i should coat it .. how will it be possible to coat all sides? or i am missing something out ?Â

Hi again
Firstly for best results, I would recommend waiting for quite a bit more than a week after installation before oiling, In Israel I used to wait at least 4-6 weeks before sanding and oiling my decks.
My reasoning being that freshly installed decking still has a high natural oil content and its mill glazed surface. Applying oil to the deck at such an early stage makes the wood look great but as oils dont mix very well the effect is largely cosmetic and short lived. Leaving the deck for some time to climatise however allows those natural oils within the wood to dry out and drain from the surface making the deck more ready to accept a coat of oil and actually nourish the wood.
As for coating all sides you’re quite right, it can’t be done after installation. If oiling all surfaces is specified then you’ll have to coat it before or during installation(Exterpark can be supplied pre coated with oil). In practice though you needn’t do so, I’d say its far more important to ensure proper ventilation to the underside of the deck keeping the timber dry to prevent damage from damp. Let the oil on the upper surfaces protect the timber and prevent damage from the sun.
