Are you ready to build 18,000,000 sq metres of timber decking?
Are you ready to be part of 18 million square metres of new decking. Well, in accordance of a recent news release from the Timber Trade Federation, this could be possible.
The UK Government need 300,000 new homes to be built every year. That’s from now until 2050. Thats 30 years of 300,000 new gardens, crikey that should make the Association of Professional landscapers very Happy…
Even if only 10% had new timber decking platforms in their gardens this would be 30,000 homes! At the very least 20 sq metres in each garden is an amount of 600,000 sq m of decking and at £160 per sq m equates to £96,000,000 (plus vat of course)… not forgetting that this figure is per year for the next 30 years…do the maths folks… I think the best business to be in is building garden decking projects. Imagine that… 18,000,000 sq m of decking of an amount of… ok you do the maths and if you write in with the correct answer the Network will give you a rather loud shout out with your own news feature.
Why you should be talking about this
Maybe if this info got the splash on the telegraph, Guardian or any of the broad sheets. This coupled with schools promulgating this fabulous news then maybe some of the kids that need a direction to be encouraged into is a no brainer… (I suppose construction is the way forward but as this is the Decking Network. You can understand why I have chosen the decking element to focus on).
Even a very small percentage of this massive volume is sufficient to encourage any self-respecting company that installs decking to consider regulations and of course Associations. The APL has its own Decking installation guide that is privy to its members and is adhered to by all of its members.
I think its wise to mention that there is already quite a few sq m of timber decking; being installed on many of the commercial constructions across the UK. Theres probably at least this amount of decking on the thousands of new balconies being constructed across the UK. Im not going to elaborate on numerous but it is a huge volume. Suffice it to say its a sensible industry with plenty of work to go around.

With the general drive still being to make smaller and smaller homes the option to look like outdoor living extends that space is of course smart business. The numbers look attractive until we look at the actual number of new builders as opposed to the ambition. The disappointment for me that speaks volumes for where we actually are in the decking market is that these will be softwood decks and not composite. We should ask ourselves why that is…is it prices, well yes, that would be a big issue but in part it is also down to quality. Regretfully the vast majority of composite decking still promoted in the UK is off generally less than should be acceptable performance supported by warranties that are written to be unenforcible by the consumer.
That said my other concern would be the skill set within the main home builders on deck construction and the implications of poorly built decks going forward.
Hi Barry
I get the general drive to build houses which are far too small that don’t service their purpose other than to drive young families to live like rabbits in a warren… however, I digress…
You know only too well that the marketing from the majority of composite companies are driving numbers up and I see the “cheap” softwood decks in the main being a DIY project rather than for the professional installer. This I assume is where the cheaper materials usually do better than they should… Perhaps a register of quality for composites?
I can see a CODE becoming law for raised decking platforms before long, I also see movement in the Associations for their own individual codes/guides of advice for timber where the composites all have their own installation guides. The APL now has its own raised decking platform guide for its members. The TDCA, NHBC have their own too.
The TV is also a poor influence where viewers will be performing their own brain surgery too … “Its ok, I saw it on the telly… how difficult could this be” methinks
