Thanks for the replies everyone and the deck looks great Tim.

After a long chat with the client and pointing out the pros and cons of both fixing methods, the client has decided to go with the invisible fixings.

I will post photos once I have completed it.

Here is one of the framework for you.

Thanks Karl I will do. We always use 6×2 at 450mm centres. Will be interesting what you think. What’s your email?

Yes Karl it was good to meet you at the show and good to see some of the products on offer.

The lights will have junction boxes but they will be low voltage so I do not think they come under part p regs (correct me if I’m wrong I leave my sparks to that part).

I think the client will go for screws visible now but thanks for the advise.

We will be using Balau for this deck, what screws do you recommend using?

I think you Are right Harry. This is a fair sized deck 80m3 so I wouldn’t want to take any risks.

Out of interest is there a minimum standard for decking ie frame off the ground by x amount, joists must be 6×2 etc?

I asked the architect, he said there are certain rules but off the top of his head could not remember. I checked Planning portal and found this.

I hope it is of use to you guys

I guess it depends on the structure. Brick walls can be up to 2 metres high on a boundary line. I know that any non permanent structures, for example sheds, can be up to 4 metres high.

We have got an issue with a proposed deck at the moment. It is in our clients back garden but their back garden goes between two neighbours front gardens. Im meeting with an architect today. I will let you know what he thinks.
