Multi-level Deck in Hertfordshire
Five deck platforms step up the garden and cantilever over an existing pond edge. Another platform wraps around the Garden Studio building, level with the inside floor level. The decked areas are disrupted with porcelain paved terraces which wrap around a central planting area.
The client has retained the existing pond as part of the new scheme. This forms a focal point where the hard landscaping merges with the new foliage to create something very special. Rose has created a hideaway, a secret haven for the ultimate in relaxing, water and planting make for an exotic and contemporary garden.
The Professional Landscaping
A Professional Garden designer needs a Professional Landscaper and so a collaboration has been born. Gerald Roche from Agents Green, a stalwart member of the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) was chosen to build this garden.
Design & build challenges were mainly around dealing with the levels; at the lower levels the platform heights needed to fit with the top of the steps leading from the house as well as the height of the existing pond edge, whilst maintaining appropriate step heights.
Gerald said “There certainly many different angle and shapes, the elevation certainly kept us on our toes. It was a lovely garden to build and to be honest over the moon to be working with such a talented rising star of the professional garden design community”.
The contractor built parts the frame off site and then adjusted on site to be more efficient. The decks were designed around the existing shrubs & trees which had be retained in the planting scheme.

The vertical timber arrangements defined the garden architecture and provided a visual structure that really did work with the scheme. Simple treated timber finished with Dark oak wood stain with Japanese influenced screens are stained to match.
The Studio building is stained black and recedes into the planting & blends with the dark wood tones. This garden spoke a language, it’s called exotic…
The materials
A treated timber frame, structural fixings, recycled plastic posts and deck tape all add to a well thought out structure. The pinnacle of the materials list has to be the Millboard decking. The exposed cut ends of the deck boards did add to the Japanese style
Rose Stockley said “Millboard was chosen for this project as iI love its authentic, natural grain look and it has great non-slip qualities; the paths are in use throughout the year so it has to be practical in all weathers”.
The garden design Brief
An existing inclined garden redesigned with paths and complex terraces which leads to a studio & sun terrace. The client is inspired by the orient and asked for an exotic look with lots of dark timber enveloped in lush planting.
The garden was designed with overlapping decks which guide you gradually up the garden, enveloped by exotic planting with views framed by the timber arches and screens.
A wraparound deck surrounds the garden studio, and terraces which provide sitting areas to make the most of the light at different times of day.
A pond with a bridge, a circular deck, a bamboo grove, evergreen planting with a focus on texture & colour is perfect for an exotic garden.
