How Does a Company Justify the Cost of Decking Installation

The true value behind the price of decking

When you receive a quote for decking installation, it may seem high at first glance. However, it reflects the unseen complexity involved. From the first site survey to the final screw, experienced installers bring structure, compliance, and beauty to your outdoor space. Every plan must align with EC5 and BS 5268-7.1, the official standards for structural timber. Understanding the cost of decking installation is vital to appreciating the value of expert workmanship, regulatory compliance, long-term safety, and the enduring quality of a properly built outdoor structure.

Designs are calculated precisely. Spans, joist sizes, and post supports must match structural tolerances. This is where skill, knowledge, and compliance blend. You don’t just pay for wood and labour — you pay for years of experience, understanding of codes, and commitment to safety.

Avoid installers who can’t show understanding of these standards.

 The cost of quality materials

Quality decking lasts and poor decking costs more in the long run. Most professionals in the UK now reject cheap hollow-core far eastern boards. These products often fail early, become unsafe, and disappoint customers. Instead, the industry leans toward Dekorators mineral-based boards, Millboard Enhanced Grain, and Trex Transcend.

These brands offer proven durability, tested design, and excellent manufacturer support. Combine this with a high-performance subframe — C24-graded timber, UC4 treatment, decking tape, or aluminium framing — and you’re building something that could last a lifetime.

Aluminium and recycled plastic frames are virtually maintenance-free.

What Professional Installers know that others don’t

There is more to decking than meets the eye. True professionals understand how the deck interacts with balustrades and stairs. These details must align structurally and legally. For example, balustrade loads must be transferred correctly into a frame designed to carry them. If not, the damage to the project will cost a fortune or even someone falling off the deck is unthinkable.

Courses provided by manufacturers train installers in everything from fixing specifications to finishing techniques. Many still cut corners by using interior screws on outdoor structures. This isn’t just bad practice — it’s a patent defect, and if failure occurs, it could be legally actionable.

If your installer uses indoor screws, walk away.

Understanding overheads and honest profit in the cost of decking installation

Running a professional landscaping company comes with costs. Not all are visible to the customer. These include:

Health and safety compliance (first aid)

Staff employment, holiday pay and pension, specialist training

CDM obligations (Construction Design and Management regulations)

Marketing, advertising, website, brochures and events

Accountants, banking, office time for all of the above

Tools and maintenance of them, electrical testing and conformance

Business storage, there’s more insurance and compliance that goes with it

Vans and transport, tax, MOT, insurance, services and maintenance

Insurance, public and employers  liability, contractors all risk, materials and of course directors…

Time taken to visit clients (unpaid) and to offer a quotation for your project. Most professional companies do charge now for their call outs, design and quotations.

Profit isn’t greed — it’s what keeps skilled people employed, trained, and available when you need them. Without a profit margin, no ethical company can stay afloat or provide aftercare.

Think of profit as the fuel that powers good service, not just cost.

The true value of a decking installation quotation

This Is More Than Decking — It’s Craft, Engineering and Weatherproofing

Installing decks in the UK means working against mud, wind, rain, and unpredictable forecasts. The work is hard. But for those who do it well, it’s about more than timber — it’s about delivering a space that lives up to the vision.

Skilled installers know how to build stringers for safe steps, integrate balustrades with structural compliance, and align manufacturer instructions with national standards. Your outdoor space deserves nothing less than professional execution.

“Would you trust someone untrained to build the structure your family stands on?”

Before you hire a decking company – Ask these 5 questions

  1. Are they trained and certified in EC5 and BS 5268-7.1? Or are they certified by a Decking brand, been trained by them and this brand offers a registered warranty. If not, how do you know they will build something safe?
  2. Can they explain how balustrades and stairs connect legally to the frame? Did they demonstrate the weight loading and offer the calculations for the project. If not, what on earth are they building?
  3. Do they provide a detailed specification, a written quotation and design, not a sketch and a guess? A text or a WhatsApp is not an official quote. You must have a written quotation with associated drawings – if not, what are you actually getting?
  4. Are they insured, CDM-compliant, and trading as a registered business? If not, who are they?
  5. Do they use outdoor-rated structural screws and quality materials that are warrantied? Do you want your deck to collapse in a few year, because it will if its not design correctly and your installer uses the correct fixings design for this very purpose… Is the completed project registered for a warranty, if not why not…

Understanding and appreciating the cost of decking installation as an important element to any professional landscaper or Deckpro….. It helps the client too.
