Millboard Composite Curved Decking in Hampton Court

Curved Millboard composite decking

A curved deck that was designed to carry a future hot tub

Back in 2012, we completed a curved composite decking project in Hampton Court using Millboard Enhanced Grainin the Driftwood colour. The brief was clear from the start. The client wanted a deck that looked elegant and flowed naturally through the garden. However, they also needed it to be structurally capable of supporting a hot tub at a later date.

Why curved decking needs proper design

Curves look effortless when they are done well. However, they are rarely simple to build. A curved deck must be designed properly from first principles. It needs strength, stability, and a subframe that will not twist or distort over time. Just as importantly, the curves must remain smooth and consistent, so the deck looks intentional rather than improvised.

The structural subframe and supporting posts

To achieve the required performance, we built a timber subframe using C16/C24 graded structural timber. We constructed the main structure with double beams, bolted securely to rebated posts that were set into concrete foundations. This created a solid framework and ensured the deck had the rigidity needed for long-term loading.

Joist spacing and the importance of 300mm centres

We set the timber joists at 300mm centres, which is a key detail when building a premium composite deck. This tighter spacing helps reduce deflection and improves the overall feel underfoot. It also supports the boards correctly, which is essential for a deck that needs to remain stable and comfortable in use.

Creating the curved perimeter with laminated strips

The curved perimeter was formed using laminated strips of WBP, bonded and sealed using an exterior-grade adhesive. This method allowed us to create a smooth and accurate curve. It also added stability to the perimeter, which helps the shape hold true for the life of the deck.

Millboard bullnose edging for a seamless finish

Millboard produced flexible bullnose edging specifically for this project. This made it possible to follow the tighter curves and achieve a clean, professional edge detail. As a result, the final shape looked crisp, refined, and fully intentional.

Invisible fixings and a premium surface finish

The deck surface was installed using 176mm wide, 3600mm long, 32mm thick boards, fixed to the subframe using Durafix stainless trimhead screws. These fixings provide an almost invisible finish, which suits a curved deck perfectly. It keeps the surface clean and allows the design to shine.

Planting that completed the look

The client provided the planting, and it was an outstanding choice. The collection of Acers added structure, colour, and seasonal interest. It was the perfect pairing with the Driftwood tone, and it brought the whole garden setting to life.
