Why the Decking Hub Matters at FutureScape 2026
Decking has changed enormously, but the way it is sometimes discussed has not.
Too often, the conversation begins and ends with the colour or finish of the board. Yet anyone who designs, specifies or builds decking knows that the visible surface is only one part of a much larger system. The structure beneath it, the support arrangement, drainage, ventilation, fixings, detailing and installation competence will usually determine how successfully that deck performs over time.
That is why the Decking Hub matters.
On 13 and 14 October 2026, I will once again be hosting the Decking Hub at FutureScape, held at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre. The Hub has become an established part of the FutureScape calendar: a place where manufacturers, suppliers, specialist installers and landscape professionals can examine decking properly through live demonstrations and open technical conversation.
This is not simply a display of attractive boards. It is an opportunity to look at decking as a complete designed and engineered system.
Moving the conversation beyond the deck board
The UK decking market now offers a far wider choice of materials, structures and installation systems than it did even a decade ago. Timber remains important, while composite, mineral-based, aluminium and other systems continue to develop. Pedestals, subframes, specialist fixings, non-penetrating supports, drainage products and lighting can all form part of a modern installation.
More choice is valuable, but it also creates more questions.
Which products work together? What support centres are required? How should water move beneath and around the structure? What happens at door thresholds, walls and changes in level? How should the specification respond to loading, fire performance, exposure and the intended use of the space? Most importantly, who takes responsibility for ensuring the complete system works rather than simply supplying one component of it?
Those are the conversations the Decking Hub should encourage.
Live demonstrations with practical value
Technical information is far more useful when people can see how a product is handled and installed. Across the two days, the Decking Hub will feature seven live sessions involving participating manufacturers, suppliers and demonstrators.
Visitors will be able to see systems close up, understand how individual components fit together and ask the questions that are difficult to answer from a brochure or product sample alone.
As host, my role is not merely to introduce each session. I will help connect the product information with the realities of design, specification, installation and long-term performance. I want each demonstration to give visitors something practical that they can take back to their next project.

From specification to innovation
I am also hosting the “The Future of Decking: From Specification to Innovation” part of the official FutureScape programme.
That title captures an important point. Innovation only creates value when it is supported by a suitable specification and competent installation. A new board, fixing or support system may solve a genuine problem, but it still needs to be understood in the context of the whole deck.
My perspective comes from more than two decades spent designing and building landscapes and specialist decking, alongside my work investigating failures as an independent expert witness. I have seen excellent decks that perform exactly as intended, but I have also inspected projects where apparently small decisions beneath the surface have led to movement, decay, poor drainage, premature failure or complete replacement.

That combination of practical installation experience and failure investigation changes the questions I ask. It is not enough to know how a product looks when it is first installed. We must also ask how it will perform after repeated wetting, seasonal movement, heavy use and years of exposure.
An independent meeting place for the decking industry
The Decking Hub brings different parts of the industry into the same space. Manufacturers can explain the thinking behind their systems. Installers can discuss what happens on site. Designers and specifiers can explore the details that need to appear before work begins. Landscape professionals can compare options and understand where different solutions are most appropriate.
The Decking Network will support that conversation before, during and after FutureScape. In the weeks ahead, we will introduce the participating businesses, preview the demonstrations and publish the complete visitor schedule. After the event, we will share technical lessons, demonstration summaries and further conversations generated at the Hub.
The aim is to create a useful industry resource, not two days of temporary noise.
