Preparing for a new decking installation

The client’s brief was to “simply” remove the existing decking platform and replace it with Trex®.

An existing raised terrace with brickwork and paving a made the design for the structure awkward. It wasn’t a straightforward design and required a detailed site survey to remove a proportion of the existing decking. A concept was presented and accepted prior to the project being formally quoted.

The client chose Trex composite decking

The client enjoyed the selection of colours provided by Trex in the Transcend range. Their choice was guided by Karl who recommended combinations of colour. Two skips later

The existing 50 sq m decking terrace was remove and two skips later it was a clear site. Excavating an old decking platform always takes more skips to remove all of the waste. It takes a lot longer that is expected too.

The new decking structure

All of the joists used in Karl’s decking structures are C24 structurally graded and treated to Use Class 4 (UC4). The design for the structure is always in accordance with the span tables in Euro Code 5 (EC5). This is the standard that all decking structures should be built in accordance with, in the UK. EC5 refers to the positioning of the posts and from this the Beams and finally the joists. They are all calculated to form a structure that will take an imposed load of 1.5kN as a minimum. It is this loading which is specified for domestic use.

Deck lighting

It is usual for karl to shy away from vertically mounted lights as in general they don’t illuminate anything. Because they are situated close to the property and illuminated with verticals either side of the door and adjacent to a planter they work well. The clients preferred this look because it looks stylish. The steps were also illuminated with the same style of lighting from Country Supplies
