If you want to enjoy the space on your own or with a limited number of others, then it’s quite a simple one. Clear the space , build a small decking terrace in your favourite spot and then sow wildflower seed everywhere else. This would make for a perfect space to be surrounded by nature, colourful flowers and help the local ecology. Birds, bees and Pollinating insects of many varieties love garden like this.

Top Tip “Surround your new decking terrace with planting, if you want an almost instant impact try wildflower turf or seed ”

It’s far more than a garden

Your garden is often seen from all angles of your property and you probably didn’t even notice. That glance in the evening when you draw the curtains, or from the kitchen whilst preparing dinner. It is often taken for granted that “it’s only a garden”; if you agree with that then you are so, so wrong. Your garden can be a place of your favourite music and the heart ‘n soul of a party. It may also be a place of absolute tranquillity surrounded by nature.

Ultimately your garden is a living entity which evolves every day. It matures over the years which increases in value. It is a canvas which you have impressed upon it with your lifestyle. This installation of lifestyle art, which you see every day, has a positive bearing on your life. If it’s a monosyllabic run down empty space with no heart and soul, no colour, or anything beautiful to admire you should reconsider this immediately. It may have a detrimental affect on your wellbeing.  If you have created even the simplest of usable zones, surrounded it with simple planting and furnished it with seating and a BBQ then they joy you will get every time you see it will be priceless.

Top Tip “Get some lighting in the area, warm white is best for that relaxing feel. Place your lights in amongst the planting which cast shadows which move in the breeze.  For that modern party feel use daylight bright white, festoon lighting is the perfect choice for this garden.”

Your favourite part of the garden

I created a simple covered area in my courtyard, it’s made from pine and sits over the corner of my decking terrace. It can be used it all year around; its lit and has a patio heater too. I can sit outside in the rain and also when it’s hot as the roof keeps us protected. It has a sedum living roof to attract the pollinators, it adds to the ecology more than most appreciate.

Top Tip “Decking + lighting + planting = the perfect start for any garden”

How big should my new decking platform be

3.6 metres deep should be the minimum and as wide as you like makes for the best decking terrace. It will easily accommodate a couple of sofas and occasional tables. It does depend upon how much space you have; your local designer or deck pro should advise

Go on, have a deck, you deserve it

If you want the best in decking for your project then Trex® and Millboard® offer the best composite colours, textures, performance and warranties between 25 and 50 years. Grad systems UK® with Accoya®, Kebony® and Moso Bamboo offer the best in natural timber which are sustainable and having warranties of between 25 and 50 years.

If you can’t stretch your investment to these products then I would miss out on the “Have this composite as its cheaper” optios and go straight for a smooth Pine decking option. This when constructed professionally will easily last over 20 years.
