Why TV gardening still moves the needle

When Alan Titchmarsh hits our screens, interest in gardening rises. It happened with Ground Force, and it’s happening again with ITV’s Love Your Garden. Audience appetite has grown—and Channel 5 is stepping in with a TV gardening show with real landscapers.

After ITV announced that Alan is to host its new gardening series called “Love your Garden”, Channel 5 has revealed plans to expand into TV gardening.

Introducing Garden ER

Channel 5 has appointed David Domoney to front eight 30-minute episodes, starting Wednesday 13 July at 19:30. The series isn’t aimed at the traditional Gardeners’ World crowd. Instead, it welcomes non-gardeners who want clear, can-do advice. As producer Kerry Richardson explains, the tone is fresh, friendly, and practical.

David is best-known as resident gardener on GMTV, This Morning, Better Homes and House of Horrors. Garden ER will feature total garden makeovers, fixing viewers gaffes and special features like “Pimp my shed” this is where David has fun breathing new life into redundant garden sheds.

“Channel 5 has not really done gardening before, so it is dipping its toe in the water,” said producer Kerry Richardson, a former producer of Gardeners’ World and Around the World in 80 Gardens with Monty Don. Kerry said Garden ER will be aimed at “non-gardeners or people with little gardening knowledge who may feel intimidated by other garden programmes”. “We are not going for the Gardeners World audiences,” Kerry added. “Channel 5 believes David Domoney can hold the attention of non-gardeners and inspire them with his can-do attitude.

Channel 5’s viewers are young and don’t incorporate a traditional gardening audience.

Real teams, real builds

The show features total garden makeovers, on-screen fixes for viewers’ gaffes, and playful segments like “Pimp My Shed.” Crucially, the builds are delivered by real landscapers—The Garden Angels led by Karl: Marcia, Brad and AJ. Projects run over several days, so construction, pricing, and advice are handled properly. Standards are kept high; shortcuts are not.
